Faith, Timeless and Contemporary

The Roman official had
astonishing faith,
common sense, really.
He believed You were Yourself.
Really believed,
believed enough
to be reasonable.
If you told his servant to be healed,
he would be.
Duh.

Your kingdom, Lord,
abounds with common sense,
horribly counter-intuitive
to those of us used
to making do
in the U.S.
We are
a bit confused,
having devised you a flag,
which belongs,
apparently,
right below our stars and stripes.

We inject
Your promises
into our own pursuits
so they will succeed—
and when they don’t
we are disappointed
and leery
of believing.
Next time,
we’ll know worse,
not realizing,
that sometimes,
Your kindest gift
is to let our servants
stay sick.

  1. Elena, I really like the thought in this poem. I once asked in a sermon, how do you rate Christianity, Democracy (as practiced in the U.S.) and Capitalism: or are they the same as some recent presidents have thought? We do place the Christian flag under the stars and strips, and both under the $. It is mind boggling to do otherwise; irresponsible at best, treasonous possibly. I like this poem
