Leanings

Plants have their ways
of leaning toward the light.
A pot at window's edge
needs turning lest
its tenant grow lopsided.
White-green weeds
in dirty basements vine
toward sun-short panes
spaced just above the ground,
and every dark-damp seed
still shears itself toward shine.

  1. I like "vine" as a verb. And for that matter, I like "shine" as a noun! Perfect use of the subjunctive in line five. And I cherish the compound adjectives, "white-green" "sun-short" "dark-damp." For these reasons, and for the exceptional verbal economy and clarity of image and language, this small poem is among your best.
