Bloggers

Why do we do this?
Is it for truths posted, like Luther's,
in a public (though little read) space?
Is it the chronicling of one's voyage,
maybe an indulgence of introspection?
Or is it a blind reach for hands we cannot see,
the sticking of an arm through a hole in the wall
to wave dumbly until someone catches on?

Do beings brush against each other in cyberspace
just as they do on solid earth?
You notice it most on country roads, at night--
the single pair of lights gliding toward you,
dipping, resurrecting,
nearer, nearer, until
you squint through headlamp sword thrusts
and then, something sweeps past with a spit of gravel,
and you are sequestered again in the quiet dark.

Perhaps this world of invisible connections
may serve, at least, as a statement of faith
that souls exists.

Dear friends, questions like these have been chafing at me. I'd love your input. Why do you blog? And why do you read other people's blogs?

  1. I blog because a friend convinced me to, and I feel thus compelled I suppose. Sometimes I enjoy it, other times its just another thing to do.
I read other people's blogs for inspiration- I like the crafting stuff out there. Or because I love the people who write them :-) like you! Always enjoy what you write even if I don't leave a comment!.

  2. I find it scary that you seemed to ask that question that has been swimming in my head for so long! But to answer it...
At first, there were a variety of reasons....an attempt to glorify God, a way to reach the outside world and let them know I exist, to chronicle my thoughts, to try explaining myself, to write for the pure joy of write (though rather badly), etc, etc. But recently I've come to another place, I write because of God and people. I want to offer something that will refresh their souls and point them to the one source that will satisfy their thirsts.
And I read because I want to see what some people have to say for themselves, and to be encouraged.
Long story, but there you have it. =)

  3. Christine-- <3 You find the cheeriest crafting ideas, and I LOVE the vocabulary words you post! Most helpful for one with poetic aspirations :)

Kattyrae-- Your "long story" is very encouraging. To follow the Greatest Commandment and the second one like it--what excellent motivation for blogging!
P.S. Your writing is very engaging. Don't speak ill of it. Such an outlook doesn't correspond with reality--and therein lies insanity ;)

    ....I've always suspected I was insane! ;)

  5. Finger exercises for the writing I so rarely have time to pursue to excellence -- having a small and friendly audience forces me to work at enough to not waste my precious friends' time by having something worth the saying and saying it reasonably well -- but because it is a small and friendly audience, not feeling the need to have it be finished enough to be publishable. The blogs I read: because lovely friends like you write them and I want to know more of who you are, and/or because they offer knowledge and wisdom that I want and need.
