The Necessity

When my father was young
and wrestling, he saw
a vision of a huge man
smiling at him, and heard
a baptism of drops
on the top of his car
from a blue sky.

I wonder now, as I walk
at angles with the visions
my father had for me,
what Dad would think,
and if he'd be pleased,
and if he would
understand.

One thing is certain--
how we long to know,
how we really must know
that when our Father sees us
He smiles.

  2. As a father, I think about this all the time, and I wince when I think of times I may have communicated anything other than a smile to my daughters. I still have the chance, now, and I am consciously letting them know that I smile on their lives. It is SO important, what our fathers think. And as a father, I also know we want our daughters to smile at us every bit as much as they want the smiles from us. I have my opinion of what your father thinks of you, and there is a lot of pride involved.
